What to Expect When Booking With Joey
Meeting with my students is the best part of my day! Here are some things to expect (as well as some recommendations) for having things run smoothly.
Before Tutoring
You will receive an instant confirmation email upon booking your session (with the Zoom link, for virtual sessions). Be sure to make a reminder for you/your student, and use the reschedule link in this email if needed.
Make sure you have a quiet place to work, have paper/pencil, have a charged battery, and are accessing me on a screen big enough to read. If there's a handout for the assignment, snap a pic and send it in advance:).
During Tutoring
Expect all sessions to start on time. You can expect us to focus on whatever math issues are most pressing. Things I've done in tutoring sessions include:
- Working through a homework assignment together
- Reviewing or reteaching a topic from scratch
- Creating challenging problems on a topic for a student to extend their thinking
No matter what, the best sessions feel like a lively discussion with jokes and celebrations and mistakes and "a-ha"s.
After Tutoring
All tutoring sessions are transcribed by Zoom, and students/families will receive a follow-up email to each session with a PDF of the notes taken as well as an AI summary of our time together. I've found these to be extremely helpful as a study tool for students and a monitoring tool for parents.

How does tutoring work?
Read below for how scheduling, paying and cancelling work, for single sessions and for bundles.
Scheduling a Tutoring Session
I use Calendly to manage my calendar to provide maximum reliability for my clients. My availability is managed directly through the calendar, and scheduling a session requires no back-and-forth and can be accomplished in under five minutes.
Single sessions
Pick a 1-hr or 0.5-hr session from the price list above. Clients pay at checkout and automatically receive a confirmation (with a Zoom link, for virtual sessions).
Single sessions can be scheduled up to two weeks in advance.
Tutoring Bundle
When purchasing a tutoring bundle, sessions can be scheduled typically months in advance, usually at least through the current semester.
Paying for a Tutoring Session
Currently, my payments are accepted via Stripe.
When scheduling a tutoring session, you will pay at checkout after selecting a date and time for tutoring.
Cancellation/Reschedule Policy
My cancellation/reschedule policy is centered around respecting that life -- especially life with teenagers -- can be unpredictable.
Every session confirmation email contains a link for the client to cancel or reschedule each meeting.
Clients must cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours in advance of the session. Cancellations with 24+ hours' notice may be rescheduled at no charge; cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice, or no-shows, are charged in full and are not eligible for rescheduling.
What to Expect During Tutoring
I have built a studio in my office centered around providing the best tutoring experience for my clients, online or in person. I have access to a writing tablet for students to see my writing in real time, and I also have graphing software that I use when appropriate (desmos.com). My goal is to have a friendly and engaging environment focused on connecting with students and deepening their understanding of math.
For virtual sessions, clients need to have only a webcam-enabled device and an internet connection to join. I strongly encourage that students not access the session via a cell phone, as the screen will be too small to reliably read the text.
The only other thing a student might want to do to prepare is send me work beforehand: a recent test, upcoming homework, work to review, etc.
